About Retrofret

Retrofret specializes in the sale and restoration of 19th and 20th century guitars, banjos, mandolins, and ukuleles. The focus is on pre-WWII acoustic and electric guitars, resonator instruments, early Hawaiian lap steels, and jazz age ukuleles and banjos. Instruments of historic and celebrity provenance also comprise its inventory. In addition to the more unusual items on hand, Retrofret has an extensive stock of vintage Martin guitars, classic Fender and Gibson electrics, Rickenbacher "Frying Pan" c.1935arch tops, and lap steels, along with a large assortment of collectible and classic amplifiers.

The parent company, New York String Service, has been in business for thirty years serving musicians and collectors both locally and worldwide. Clients include museums, cultural institutions, auction houses, film and television production companies, and performing artists. The enterprise got its start in 1976 as a musical instrument cooperative in the Soho district of NYC. In 1982, owner Steve Uhrik relocated the company to its current home in the historic Carroll Gardens/Gowanus Canal area of Brooklyn, NY.

Retrofret.com is the dynamic, new online presence created to address the interests of the vintage fretted instrument market. Its companion site, www.musurgia.com, offers a diverse selection of musical antiquities, non-western instruments, experimental musical devices, memorabilia, photos and ephemera relating to the musical experience.New York String Service is often called upon for written appraisals and repair assessments. The on-premises repair shop is one of the largest facilities of its kind in the New York/Tri-state area and is fully equipped to handle historically correct restorations as well as everyday repairs.
