Guild M-65 SB Model Thinline Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1966), made in Hoboken, NJ, serial # ED-177, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, laminated mahogany back and sides; laminated maple top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, original two-tone chipboard case.
The Guild M-65 is a relatively obscure but great little guitar, with a small fully hollow f-hole body configuration that was fairly unusual in the 1960s. This super clean example has the rarer full 24 3/4" scale neck; many M-65s found today are the 3/4 model with a short-scale fingerboard. Despite its diminutive body, the guitar is surprisingly full sounding, incredibly light and very comfortable to handle. The single-coil pickup is specific to this era, reputedly nicknamed the "Mickey Mouse" by Guild's assemblers. It is built more like the typical Fender pickup than other Guild units and is fairly bright sounding, making for a less dark-toned instrument than many fully hollow body instruments.
This sunburst top example was made in early/mid 1966, in Guild's Hoboken factory, a couple of years before the compaly made the move up to Rhode Island. It sports typical period features including the small single-coil pickup in a metal frame, Guild harp tailpiece, height-adjustable rosewood bridge with metal feet and Japanese-made strip tuners. Based on Guild's model specific serial numbers of the period, only 34 of these were sold in 1966. This full-scale M-65 is one of Guild's cool but often under-appreciated designs, a super light and handy electric guitar and a neat piece of vintage Guild coolness.
Overall length is 39 9/16 in. (100.5 cm.), 13 3/4 in. (34.9 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/16 in. (5.2 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).
This is a super clean and 100% original guitar, which looks to have been played very little through five decades. The finish shows only some very minor checking, scuffs, dings, and dents; overall it looks more like a year or two old than 55! The only really noticeably worn spots are where the bridge base feet have slid around a bit over the top. The headstock veneer shows hardly any of the typical shrinkage and lifting. The frets also show hardly any wear. This is a neat package of a great-playing little guitar in the original SSC complete with the hang tag and instruction sheet still in the pocket. Excellent + Condition.
