Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1974), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 537478, black polyester finish, alder body, maple neck, rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

This is a super nicely preserved mid-1970's Fender Mustang, showing some light wear but all original and unaltered and a surprisingly great guitar. This 'Stang was built not long after the end of the run for the rather whimsical "Competition" version of the model, as the more drab Watergate-era 70's kicked in. When it was made the finish options for the model were now sunburst, natural, or black; this ebony-finished example with a plain white pickguard is the least commonly seen and definitely the sharpest looking!

This Mustang has an indistinct neck-heel stamp that offers no useful dating information but the pots are coded to the 38th week of 1974. The actual features and sound remain little changed from 1960s models with two black plastic covered pickups controlled by on/off/phase switches and the Fender "Dynamic Vibrato" with a solid saddle floating bridge. The finish is Poly but not as heavy feeling as some of the "Thick Skin" coatings on higher end Fenders of the time. The black body with the natural neck and white pickguard give this Mustang a very slick look that is fairly rare, as the pickguard plastic was changed to black a year or so later.

The Mustang series was Leo Fender's last major original design for the company that bore his name, launched in 1964 to immediate success. By the early 1970s the proliferation of cheaper Japanese guitars had undercut the market and sales were way down, making ones from this era comparative rarities. The Mustang has proved a timeless favorite of countless garage and pro bands from the 1960s and '70s until today, easily exceeding Leo's original intentions as a simple but effective student instrument with vibrato. This starkly black-and-white version is a cool and fairly unusual variant of this perennial favorite, quite light for a 1970s Fender at 6.75 Lbs. and a really fine player, easily the equal of its earlier brethren.

Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

Overall this is a very nice example, all original with some light wear but original and complete with no repairs or alterations. The finish has some dings and dents, mostly to the back with some dinks on the back of the neck but no large areas of loss. The frets have been crowned down just a bit and the fingerboard has some light wear in the lower positions but the guitar plays and sounds fine. It includes the black Tolex original hard case, more sturdily built than the familiar grey '60's model in line with other fenders of the period. Excellent Condition.
