Ampeg B-15N Portaflex, * LOCAL PICKUP ONLY Model Tube Bass Amplifier (1966), made in Linden NJ, serial # 040794, blue checked Tolex finish.

Overall this is a very nicely preserved example of the all-time classic recording bass amp, Ampeg's B-15N. From its inception until today, this model has been the preferred in-house bass amplifier for the great majority of professional studios, and was a lower volume gig standard as well. We see a decent number of period B-15s, but most have seen decades of use and often show heavier wear and/or modifications. This 1966 model is easily one of the cleanest we have had and just a very well cared for and still wonderful sounding amp.

We also have a matching extension 15" speaker cabinet for this amp available seperately, a very rare Ampeg piece that few players ever ordered.

Height is 29 in. (73.7 cm.), 21 in. (53.3 cm.) width, and 13 3/4 in. (34.9 cm.) deep.

Externally, the amp is very well-preserved. The signature "Blue Check" Tolex is in pristine shape, with hardly any visible wear; even the corners are free of blemishes. There is some light scuffing to the tops of the transformers and tube cage from decades of the amp being flipped and stowed in the cabinet. The original Ampeg logo from the upper front of the cabinet is present, and the amp comes with the original matching cover as well. The chassis retaining screws appear to have been replaced with bolts on top but work equally well. The handle is a correct modern repro; this part is quite often replaced by now.

Internally, this amp remains nicely original. The speaker appears to be the original CTS-made 15" ceramic-magnet unit that came stock in many of these, marked 137-619 dating it to the 19th week of 1966. The amp has seen our typical servicing and maintenance, including replacement of all electrolytic capacitors, adding a grounded 3-prong power cord, cleaning of all sockets, pots and jacks and biased to spec. The outside-mounted transformers appear to be original, although the outer patina on the finish varies slightly between the two, which may very well just be due to wear and tear or simply variation at the factory.

Other than these minor points this amp is in great shape and sounds truly fabulous. The speaker packs a nice even punch, with no boominess or rattles, even at higher volumes. This is a lovely example overall; a true classic amp and perennial studio staple. Excellent Condition.
