C. F. Martin 00-21NY Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1965), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 205345, natural lacquer finish, Brazilian rosewood back and sides, spruce top, mahogany neck, rosewood fingerboard & bridge, original black hard shell case.
This beautiful 00-21NY is as close as the 1960's Martin company got to making a 1920's guitar. The "folk boom" of the late '50's made the old-style 12-fret Martins fashionable among discerning traditional players, and several so-called "New York" models were officially added to the line in 1962. These were named to honor both the Martin company's original roots in that city and the strength and influence of the contemporary Greenwich Village folk scene. With lighter bracing, no pickguard and an older style 12-fret neck with wide fingerboard, no markers and a slotted headstock these were nearly identical in look and feel to their 1920's ancestors. The 00-21NY was the flagship rosewood model in this series.
This example is from the second half of 1965, representing an early Martin "re-issue". There is some interesting grain to the Brazilian rosewood back and sides (often seen on older Style 21's) and a spruce top. The differences from a 1920's guitar are the slightly heavier build all around, "modern" 1960 Waverly strip tuners, headstock decal, somewhat heavier top bracing and the tang frets instead of '20's style bar fretwire. This one still has the old-style small maple bridge plate that would be beefed up with rosewood a few years on even on these "NY" models.
These models were originally sold as suitable for nylon or steel strings. While the construction is lighter than most '60's Martins the guitar still performs excellently with light gauge steels. This is simply a superb playing and sounding guitar, now itself closer in age to 1922 than 2024! This is one of the coolest 1960's Martins we have seen in a while, and a splendid instrument.
Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.), 14 1/16 in. (35.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 in. (10.2 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.).
Over the last nearly 60 years old this Martin has been generally well preserved, with some typical play wear and a few maintenance repairs. The back sides have some scattered dings, nicks and scratches, The top showing some finger/pick wear below the strings including a couple of very small touched in spots. The guitar is crack-free except for a small dink on the upper treble bout below the heel that does not go through to the inside.
The neck had been very neatly reset, an excellent job. The bridge has been reglued, and shows no sign of lifting. The top has a slight rise behind the bass side of the bridge but all is solid internally, the braces and small maple bridgeplate remaining structurally sound. The tuner plates show some corrosion and the original frets have some light wear in the lower positions. This rosewood 00 sounds and plays fantastic, very full-bodied for a smaller instrument fully reminiscent of the powerful sound of its 1920s ancestors. It comes complete with the original green-lined hardshell case. Overall Excellent - Condition.
