Fender Jaguar Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1966), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 123944, Olympic White lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.
This is an extremely nice early CBS-era Custom Color Fender Jaguar, all original and overall nicely preserved. The guitar has the expected "transitional" early 1966 features: a bound rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay, tortoise plastic pickguard, then-new "F" plate Fender tuning machines and the older style gold Fender logo on the matching headstock. Within a few months of this guitar being made block inlay would be added to the fingerboard changing the look of the Jaguar for the rest of the decade.
The all-original finish is Olympic White, one of the more common of the Custom colors Fender offered at the time for a $19 upcharge on order but still much rarer than the standard sunburst. The clear lacquer overcoat often yellows with age and exposure to the elements (especially smoky clubs) causing the hue to change to a more amber/blonde look over the decades; this one less than some. It carries an early "F" series serial number, The neck is stamped March 66 on the heel and the pots are dated to the 12th week of that year. This guitar is a nice example for this period, an excellent player remaining original and complete including the flip-up mute with foam has likely replaced; the originals have generally ossified to the consistency of ancient chewing gum by now!
Despite a recent surge in popularity the Fender Jaguar remains a somewhat under-appreciated guitar with several interesting features. The 24" scale length is shorter than other professional grade Fenders, and it was intended to be easier to play with the heavy strings common at the time. The pickups are optimized for clarity and crispness; all factors that led to the Jaguar losing popularity in the late '60's as twang went out and slinky strings, distortion and crunch came in! Custom color Jaguars were made in decent numbers in this period but are still relatively rare. This was the top-of-the line Fender solidbody in 1965-6 and was an expensive, flashy and very high quality guitar.
Overall length is 40 in. (101.6 cm.), 14 in. (35.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This lovely Jag remains all original (except possibly that mute foam) and complete including the trem arm and snap-on bridge cover. It has been played but not abused and shows some fairly minor if typical wear overall. The body finish has noticeable checking and the clear lacquer overcoat has yellowed somewhat to a warmer off/white hue. There are some minor chips and dings on the body and some wear through the finish on the sides of the neck, but nothing excessive. The headstock is relatively clean with some darkening of the decal.
Areas of the chrome plating show some light wear as well, but nothing too serious. There is a very small amount wear to the original small fret wire in the lower positions and playability is excellent. Overall this is a very nice example of a custom color '66 Jaguar in the always-sharp Beach Boys-approved white livery, complete with a clean original case with the original pre-CBS style Fender branded strap in the pocket. Excellent - Condition.
