Jerry Jones Baby Sitar Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (2000s), made in Nashville, TN, Bombay Red crackle lacquer finish, hardwood body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, black gig bag case.

Like all of the sadly missed the Jerry Jones line, this Baby Sitar is based a short lived Danelectro model, in this case the lower budget simplified version of the original elaborate Coral Sitar. That Danelectro-branded instrument was only in production for less than a year around 1968 before the demise of the company so is rare today compared to the more familiar Coral. Jones built excellent re-issues of both, but again the "Baby" seems to be the rarer version.

This "Baby Sitar" reduces the original more complex instrument to its most basic essentials. It lacks the semi-hollow body, extra pickups and the array of "drone" strings along the upper bout of the Coral model. The instrument has six strings in standard guitar tuning with the "Sitarmatic" bridge and mounts a single Jerry Jones lipstick pickup at the bridge (all you need for the sitar sound) with tone and volume controls.

The Baby Sitar's small solid wood body is loosely shaped like the gourd used for a real sitar, as is the headstock. Jones carefully reproduced the unique "Bombay Red" crackle finish of the original. The maple neck has a rosewood fingerboard with pearloid dot inlays, and unlike the original an adjustable truss rod. The pickguard is back-painted Lucite with a scroll design around the perimeter. As the body shape is not particularly ergonomic, a curved metal leg rest bar is fitted along the bottom edge for seated playing.

Despite its stripped-down form, this instrument is no less functional than its upscale sisters. In the late 1960s, '70s quite a few hit records made great use of the unmistakable sound, including some classic vintage soul records with no psychedelic intent at all! This high quality reissue is a very useful recording instrument can add a distinctive flavor to a wide range of music far beyond its 1960s roots. Sadly Jones closed his operation in 2011, leaving only cheaper low-budget imitations to carry the electric sitar flag forward and making his creations nearly as sought-after as the originals.

Overall length is 36 1/2 in. (92.7 cm.), 14 1/4 in. (36.2 cm.) across at the widest point, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 21/32 in. (27 mm.).

This little sitar shows light use, with a some minor dings and dents to the finish mostly on the body edges. The back-painted Lucite pickguard has a few tiny cracks at the screw holes but is solidly intact. The frets and fingerboard show virtually no wear and the instrument is original and complete and plays very well, sounding exactly like it is supposed to with the classic bright sizzling twang Vinnie Bell and Nathan Daniel envisioned. Overall Excellent Condition.
