Gibson ES-175 Model Arch Top Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1965), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 368538, sunburst lacquer finish, laminated maple body, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.

This is a played-in but not seriously abused mid-'60s ES-175, with some general wear and minor repair. Overall it is a nice gigging example of Gibson's perennial "working man's" electric arch-top. Offering one of Kalamazoo's best combinations of features and value, the ES-175 has been consistently popular since its launch in 1949 and still considered one of the classic electrics of all time. This cherry sunburst beauty is from 1965 when Gibson narrowed the necks on these instruments to a 1 5/8" nut width instead of the traditional 1 11/16". The hardware also changed from nickel to chrome that year, but otherwise the specs of the instrument were little changed from the late 1950s.

With a single Patent-number humbucking pickup, adjustable Tune-O-Matic bridge on a rosewood base, early '60s-style metal-capped knobs and "wavy" tailpiece, this 175 has all the classic elements. While to many players it instantly murmurs "jazz" when plugged in, it is actually a fairly versatile guitar suitable for a wide range of styles. That said this single-pickup model is mostly associated with many jazz greats including Herb Ellis, Jim Hall, Kenney Burrell, and many more.

Overall length is 40 7/8 in. (103.8 cm.), 16 1/16 in. (40.8 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/8 in. (8.6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This guitar has been gigged over the last six decades but remains relatively clean and original overall, with some typical repair. There is general checking to the all-original finish, small dings, scuffs and dents and an area of belt buckle wear down to the wood on the lower back. The only alteration is the Kluson tuners were replaced by chrome Schallers long ago when that was the thing to do, otherwise the guitar remains original. A vintage Tune-O-Matic bridge saddle is currently fitted to the rosewood base, an original Gibson rosewood saddle is in the case pocket.

The notable repairs include a very small "smile" crack on the back of the headstock, not extending to the sides at all. It actually looks like a scratch, and is very solidly repaired. There is a small fill in the back of the neck just below this. There are also several tight sealed stress marks around the jack on the lower side, almost ubiquitous with these side-jack Gibsons. An old plastic Gibson strap button is fitted on the heel, likely added when the guitar was new. The original large frets were crowned down flatter long ago and show some subsequent wear but still play well. This is a cool example of a period 175, a classic of its type and if one pickup is all you need still one of the best straight-ahead hollow-body electrics ever made. Very Good + Condition.
