Squier by Fender Bass VI Antigua Model Electric 6-String Bass Guitar (2024), made in Indonesia, serial # ICSF24025146, Antigua shaded finish, hardwood body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, black gig bag case.

This Squier VI is a "re-issue" of an instrument that likely never existed, or was an exceptional rarity if so: a Fender Bass VI in the rare "Antigua" finish, which was not used on solidbody instruments until some years after the VI was discontinued in 1975. An original Bass VI with this bound, black-block-maple-fingerboard neck option from the end of the 1960s or '70s would be a serious rarity in any case and as far as we know none were ever built with this finish.

This Indonesia-made Antigua model otherwise follows the original pattern of an early '70s VI closely. The pickups and electronics are Jaguar coils with the magnetic "claw" fitting underneath and a simple and effective on/off switching for each. The fourth "strangle" switch cuts lows to allow for a more guitar-like tonality in any pickup setting. The Jazzmaster/Jaguar floating bridge and trem system are the same as mid-'60s models, with the solid block Mustang-style saddles adopted in 1964.

The original Fender VI simply never caught on in a major way despite being a very well-engineered and useful instrument; The Beatles and a number of other pro players used the Bass VI quite a bit as a recording instrument, but Fender's lavish and expensive 6-string bass guitar was never a common sight. It is still fairly obscure today; This is a well-made super affordable reissue, an excellent recording instrument and a timelessly cool Big Twang machine.

Overall length is 44 3/4 in. (113.7 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 30 in. (762 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This 6-string bass looks very little used if at all, the protective plastic "afterbirth" is still on the pickup covers. It shows some luight handling marks and plays and sounds very well, a worthy and super affordable example of this cool Fender big-twang machine at a very low budget price. A slightly battered but fairly functional gig back is included. This VI is another recent escapee from the Wilco Loft, although it does not have any markings confirming that on the bag. Overall Excellent + Condition.
