Rick Turner Model 1 LB Reissue Owned by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco Model Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar (2001), made in Santa Cruz, California, serial # 59/120, natural lacquer finish, mahogany body, laminated maple/purpleheart neck, ipe fingerboard, original blond tolex hard shell case.

The late Rick Turner had a celebrated history as a brilliant if iconoclastic luthier. He was one of the main designer/craftsman at San Francisco's Alembic organization in the early '70s, with major input into their ground-breaking basses before going solo later in the decade. He then worked with Fleetwood Mac's Lindsay Buckingham to craft a new type of guitar that blended electric ease with acoustic sensibilities and thus, the Model 1 was born. Lindsey Buckingham wanted a single instrument that could combine the warmth of a Les Paul with the clarity of a Stratocaster, and cover acoustic parts on stage as well. The Turned Model 1 was designed to cover all these bases, and Buckingham has used them pretty much exclusively ever since.

This Model 1 "LB" is a single-pickup semi-hollow electric guitar with chambers hidden beneath the surface of its solid mahogany top. The unique sculpted, subtly cut-away mahogany body is single bound all around with black plastic, fitted with chrome hardware and a plastic electronics cavity cover. The comfortable 5-ply laminated neck continues Turner's Alembic-era aesthetic with an ornate display of maple and purpleheart. The arrow-shaped headstock is faced with a purpleheart veneer ornamented with the Turner logo and "sun-lion" company seal. The dot-inlaid fingerboard is ipe, a hardwood comparable to rosewood, fitted with wide stainless steel frets. The chrome bridge is a Schaller-style with adjustable roller saddles; the tuners are also Schallers.

The versatile electronics are Rick Turner's calling card, and the model 1's most outstanding feature with options for both passive and active amplification. A single "hot humbucker" lies in the center of the guitar in a plastic console that can be popped out of the guitar with a hex bolt on the back. In passive mode, it has a simple volume and tone control with a push-pull knob for coil tapping. Engaging the active mode enables the Eclipse preamp with the company's signature active Parametric EQ. In addition, there is a piezo pickup that can be blended in either position.

This Model 1 truly unique instrument; designed 5-+ years ago in the late '70s this is STILL a singular creation. This example is a reissue, but many of these innovations were well ahead of their time in the early 1980's when Buckingham was rocking his original Model 1 while trying to avoid Stevie's witchy gaze! This particular 2001 Model 1 did a stint at the Wilco Loft in Chicago where it was played in studio and on stage by Jeff Tweedy.

Overall length is 37 3/4 in. (95.9 cm.), 12 in. (30.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This Rick Turner Model 1 is in great shape overall with very few signs of playwear at all; it is in all original condition from the finish to the hardware to the electronics inside. The original frets are clean and resting in the ipe fingerboard free of any divoting; the back of the neck is comparably clean without any notable dings or scratches. Some wear on the nickel plated pickup coved is

The electronics are untouched and work as they should. There is a handwritten date and signature from Rick Turner on the back of the headstock (though it is a bit hard to read in a lighter Sharpie over some very figured wood). Overall, this is an issue-free example with a mighty provenance. It comes with its original blond tolex hardshell case with the signature markings of the Wilco Loft along the bottom, and inside the case is the certificate of authenticity from the Wilco Loft validating the provenance of this piece. Overall Excellent Condition.
