Rickenbacker Model 4001 Owned by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco Model Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1979), made in Los Angeles, California, serial # SF-3009, Autumnglo brown sunburst finish, laminated maple neck and body, padouk fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

Here is a late 70's iteration of Rickenbacker's ever-popular 4001 bass in a browned-out "Autumnglo" sunburst finish, a less common option of the time. The 3-piece laminated neck-through maple body was assembled at Rickenbacker's Los Angeles factory at a time when this one model was the company's far-and-away most successful product. The neck is a soft C-shape that slowly tapers to a flatter oval in the upper positions with a padouk fingerboard with white binding and triangle pearloid inlays. Up top are a set of Kluson tuners, which Rickenbacker returned to after an ill-fated stint with Grovers earlier in the 1970s. At the bottom end of the strings is a fully adjustable chrome bridge/mute assembly.

The controls are the standard Rickenbacker pattern, with volume and tone for each pickup with a 3-way switch. As is typical for Rick, the tone knobs are on top and the volumes below, unlike most other makers. A pair of "high gain" Rickenbacker single coil pickups are routed in classic Rick fashion to the dual Standard and Rick-O-Sound outputs, though this model never carried the 5th "blend" knob between the pickups. This delightful bass was a standard of its era and this one previously belonged to beloved bassist-come-guitarist, Jeff Tweedy of Chicago rock heroes Wilco.

Overall length is 45 in. (114.3 cm.), 13 3/8 in. (34 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 13/16 in. (4.6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 33 1/2 in. (851 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

Overall this is a very clean and original bass showing just some light finish wear overall but no signs of abuse, repair, or modification over 45 years. The original "Autumnglo" finish is browner than the more common fiery red "Fireglo" but equally attractive in a subtler way. The body has some scattered tiny dings and dents here and there, and the original frets show a similar lack of major wear with plenty of life left in them. All hardware is original and clean save a bit of patina here and there, and all plastic components from the guard and knobs to the Rickenbacker truss rod cover are in place except the often-removed plastic bridge pickup cover.

This is splendid playing and sounding bass, beautiful to behold and a delight to play, complete in the original HSC with the Wilco Loft markings in the standard spot along the bottom edge. Also inside the case lives a certificate of authenticity from the Wilco Loft validating the provenance of this piece. Overall Excellent - Condition.
