Eko Model 995 Violin Bass Owned by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco Model Electric Bass Guitar (1967), made in Recanati, Italy, serial # 331606, sunburst polyester finish, laminated maple body, spruce top, laminated maple neck with ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

This is one of the enduring 1960's slightly oddball bass designs and an American garage band favorite (although of course made in Italy!), and it comes to us from one of the enduring oddball American garage band lovers: Jeff Tweedy (made in Illinois!).

While obviously influenced by the Hofner Beatle Bass' success, Eko created a much flashier and in some ways more practical instrument to a similar template. The fully hollow maple body is larger with open F-holes in the pressed spruce top, while the laminated maple neck is bolted on with a much solider feel. The most conspicuous feature is the crested headstock, with the Eko "E" logo on the protruding center section. This example is very well preserved with later 1967 features including the newer style round-magnet pickups, fully adjustable bridge, metal button tuners and a standard pickup selector switch in place of the earlier lateral "Klunk" lever.

For some reason lost to history this model was extremely popular in Los Angeles around 1966; this model bass was used by used by LA stalwarts Love, the Standells, the Music Machine, the Grass Roots, Doug Lubhan (the Doors satellite bassist) and many others. This is a superb example of a very cool bass and a bonafide 60's Garage Band classic!

Overall length is 44 1/2 in. (113 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/8 in. (5.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 30 in. (762 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This bass is wonderfully clean with all original finish and mostly original hardware; The tailpiece has some corrosion on the baseplate and may be a correct repro; and the switch tip is not original. This bass is free of the heavy finish checking these Italian-made instruments are prone to, looking almost brand new safe a few minor shows of wear, scratches and dings. It is strung with Jeff's choice of flats, and an extra (likely original) set of strings is in the case. All the suave original plastic trimmings, like the almost space-age looking finger rest and Eko emblazoned pickguard, are present and uncracked.

This is an excellent player with a nice straight neck and plenty of fret life. It resides in its original deluxe black tolex case with some case candy (an original Eko hangtag that could serve as an ornament for your rear view window or Christmas tree) and the typical markings of the Wilco loft along the bottom edge; also in the case is a certificate of authenticity from the Wilco Loft validating the provenance of this piece. Overall Excellent Condition.
