Guttlin Baron Bass Owned by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco Model Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (2024), made in Hasselt, Belgium, serial # 225, copper brown matte finish, mahogany body and neck rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

Guttlin is the nom de guerre of Belgium's Karel Phlix who began building instruments in 2007. A one-man operation, Guttlin was designed as a vehicle to create contemporary basses with a vintage aesthetic and philosophy without falling into the all-too-common snare of crafting reproductions of existing vintage basses. The designs are retro-futuristic with a distinct space age vibe, somewhere between classic Americana and something you might see Judy Jetson playing. Each instrument is made by hand by Phlix alone from tip to tail, including the house-made BarBar pickups, knobs, and pickguards.

The Baron bass is one of Guttlin's long-scale bass offerings, a 34" scale bass with a bound mahogany body and mahogany bolt-on neck finished in a mattified copper paint. A two-way truss rod lies beneath the rosewood fingerboard and smaller vintage-style fretwire. The BarBar pickup is a punchy single coil inspired by the Gibson P13 pickup; it's handmade in house from start to finish, from the winding to the "slope" shaped aluminum cutout. The two-piece piece pickguard and knobs are Guttlin-made; the tuners are Hipshots and the bridge is Williamson. It's lightweight and comfortable at just 7.5 pounds and is a breezy treat to play.

This particular example comes to us from a lifelong bassist who eventually decided to explore guitar: Wilco's Jeff Tweedy.

Overall length is 45 in. (114.3 cm.), 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 9/16 in. (4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/2 in. (38 mm.)., 7.5 lbs.

Overall this entirely original bass has minimal signs of wear and was obviously only carefully used in the Loft studio; the original frets show hardly any wear, and the matte finish is smooth and unmarred but for a couple very tiny scratches on the back by the electronics cavity and by the strap buttons. Nothing has been altered internally or externally on the instrument.

This bass resides in its original case with all the candy: a laminated Guttlin spec sheet for the bass, truss rod wrenches, some stickers, some business cards, and even some wood shavings from when this instrument was born. The Wilco Loft markings are in the standard spot along the bottom edge of the case, and inside the case lives a certificate of authenticity from the Wilco Loft validating the provenance of this piece. Overall Excellent Condition.
