Resonator and Flange Banjo Ukulele, made by Harmony , c. 1930
Resonator and Flange Model Banjo Ukulele, made by Harmony, c. 1930, made in Chicago, brown lacquer finish, laminated mahogany neck, rim and resonator, original black chipboard case.
This is a nice original example of a better grade flange-and-resonator banjo-uke from the later 1920's-early '30s. It was made by Harmony most likely for a jobber or catalog retailer like for Sears, Roebuck & Co. The main visual feature is the elaborate decal on the bound resonator back which adds some flash to the instrument. The chrome flange doesn't hurt either. The neck is laminated mahogany with an ebonized fingerboard, the resonator and rim are mahogany as well. The tuners and tailpiece are typical of the period and all hardware appears original. This is a decently made and appointed instrument for the time and still a solid player almost a century along.
Overall length is 22 1/4 in. (56.5 cm.), 8 in. (20.3 cm.) diameter head, and 3 1/8 in. (7.9 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/4 in. (32 mm.).
This 95-or-so year old piece remains very solid and all original except for a later skin head and bridge. It shows some light wear overall and a bit of dirt on the head, but overall remains relatively clean. This little baby is a fun piece that can be quite loud if needed; a very well-made, excellent-sounding and playing banjo-uke still in the battered but functional original chipboard case. Overall Very Good + Condition.
