Fender Precision Bass Model Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1962), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 81885, sunburst re- finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original brown tolex hard shell case.

This is a great player's example of one of the ultimate vintage electric basses: an original slab-fingerboard Fender Precision from mid-1962. This bass has a very old refinish to the body and a lot of wear to the neck but retains the classic sound and feel of this ultimate version of the perennially most popular electric bass. The original pots are dated to the 18th week of 1962 and the heel shows a JUN 62 date stamp.

This Precision bass carries all the classic pre-CBS 1960s features that define the era's Fender basses. The clay dot, thick slab rosewood fingerboard neck has a noticeably thicker profile than the '58-'59 one-piece maple necks. The headstock is adorned with the old "Spaghetti" Fender logo decal. The finish on the body is a 3-tone sunburst which actually looks very much like late '60s Fender work; although we do not believe this to be a Fullerton factory job it is very professionally done. The thick tortoise celluloid pickguard is fully intact as are the original pickups and wiring.

This bass is an absolute classic, as played by the great majority of electric bassists of the 1960s and heard on literally thousands of recordings. This example still retains its original chrome pickup cover, with a repro bridge cover added for effect. At well under 9 Lbs. (with both covers ON) this is fairly light for a Precision Bass from ANY era, with a superbly resonant sound even unplugged. In any context this remains a wonderful instrument for any style of music, an absolute joy to play and a prime example of the glory days of Fender.

Overall length is 45 3/4 in. (116.2 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.)., 8.69 lbs.

This bass has been heavily played, with good reason! We are told it was gigged up and down the Jersey Shore for decades. The finish on the body is a latter 3-color sunburst with the red heavily faded; the yellow section runs farther into the upper "horn" more than a typical early '60s burst. It looks more like a 1968 era Fender 'burst, although we don't know when it was shot it has been on the bass a long time and shows general wear with dings and chips mostly top the edges and a decent sized armwear spot on the upper face.

The finish on the back of the neck is mostly worn away giving that much coveted super played-in Fender feel. What remains is heavily "smoked"; someone cleaned the headstock perhaps a bit too aggressively causing scuffmarks on the face but fortunately left the original "spaghetti logo" decal intact. The bass still carries the original narrow frets showing some visible wear but still fully playable; it must have been played with flatwound strings for a good part of its life, with rounds used later on. The bone nut remains original.

There is no structural damage or visible repair to the instrument. The original tortoise Celluloid pickguard has some of the typical shrinkage but no cracked screw holes or corners popped off. There is some scarring by the truss rod from adjustments. The pickup and wiring are original and correct as are the original Kluson tuners, threaded-saddle bridge, knobs, plastic fingerrest/"Tug Bar" and the pickup's chrome cover which has a small dent in the top. The bridge cover is a repro.

Even considering the body refinish this is simply a superb player's 1960s Fender bass with the classic warm but clear sound and an effortless player. This veteran remains as it has been from the beginning in the original brown Tolex HSC, heavily worn but still functional with a later leather handle. Overall Very Good + Condition.
