Fender Precision Bass Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1964)
Fender Precision Bass Model Solid Body Electric Bass Guitar (1964), made in Fullerton, California, serial # L30719, sunburst lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.
This is a superbly lovely and solidly pre-CBS Precision, one of the cleanest we have had with the look, feel, and sound that defines the classic 1960s Fender bass. Features particular to this period include a thin-lam rosewood fingerboard with clay dot inlay and the old small wire frets, "transition" silver Fender logo decal, tortoiseshell pattern thick nitrocellulose pickguard and Kluson "reverse" bass tuners. The neck and body are finished with the thin Pre-CBS style lacquer in a beautiful blended sunburst finish that is a bit mellower than the "target" bursts of 1965 and after.
The neck heel is stamped 5 JUN64C, the pots are coded to the 10th week of that year. The bass was likely assembled in the summer of '64, just months before the CBS takeover in January 1965. It has apparently seen only light use over 60+ years and remains far better preserved than most from the period. It has the classic Precision sound with a bright midrange growl that warms up nicely when the tone knob is rolled off a bit. At 8.8 Lbs. (with both covers mounted) this is a medium-light Precision with a superbly resonant sound even unplugged.
This is simply a great example of the world's premier electric bass, still ruler of the roost 60+ years on and ready for the next half-century of low end action. This era's Precision Bass is an absolute classic, played by the majority of the great electric bassists of the 1960s and beyond heard on literally thousands of recordings since then. It remains a wonderful instrument for any style of music, an absolute joy to play, and a prime example of the glory days of the original Fullerton, California Fender factory.
Overall length is 45 3/4 in. (116.2 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.)., 8.8 lbs.
This bass remains in fine all-original condition. The original thin lacquer finish has typical very light wear with scattered small dings, dents and chips to the finish but no large areas of loss. A few tiny dinks on the body show some discreet careful topical touchup under blacklight. The sunburst is bright and completely unfaded; this one was never played in any smoky bars...in fact, it does not seem to have been played much at all. The hardware is all original and has some light plating wear in spots.
The original thin wire frets show some very light wear, but nothing that impedes play. The bass is set up with LaBella flatwound strings for the traditional vintage sound and feel. This is truly a superb example of the last-year Pre-CBS Precision; medium/light, perfectly balanced and simply one of the nicest '64s we have had. It is housed in the original "no logo" black Tolex Fender case with a small repair at the top end. Overall Excellent Condition.
