Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1966), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 167581, Dakota Red lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original grey tolex hard shell case.

This is a superbly well-preserved and very attractive 1966 Fender Mustang, all original and showing very little wear. This example was made less than two years after the model's debut in the second half of 1964, and shows no changes except the pearloid dots on the fingerboard in place of the earlier "clay" versions. The Mustang was Fender's classiest student guitar, basically the same as the Duo-Sonic II with the addition of the new "Dynamic vibrato" tailpiece and a floating bridge. The model was instantly successful and has proved a timeless favorite of countless garage bands and even many pro players from the 1960s and '70s until today.

The body on this example sports a deep red lacquer finish with virtually no yellowing or fade, and very little in the way of wear. The pickguard is laminated plastic with a snazzy pearloid top layer. The neck is stamped May 1966, the pots coded to the 31st week of that year. The Fender Mustang was the most popular electric guitar in the world in 1966, with over 16,000 sold that year alone, far more than any other competitive instrument. This is a fantastic undisturbed example, one of the nicest we have seen. Like its contemporary automotive namesake the early Mustang remains an American classic and still represents a great deal in an original 1960s Fender guitar!

Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This guitar is all original and super clean, with just a few small finish dings and dents and some very light fret and fingerboard wear in the lower positions. It is unaltered with no repairs or modifications and complete including the original trem arm, bridge cover, grey HSC, original black leather strap, Mustang hang tag booklet (with another '66 serial number but cool anyway) and even the original receipt for a $100 deposit put down in late '66. There are a lot of '66 Mustangs out there but they don't come much nicer than this! Excellent + Condition.
