Gibson LG-1 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1951), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 9090-18, sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.
Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 3/8 in. (11.1 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).
This Gibson LG-1 was Gibson's budget flat top in the early 1950's, essentially the same as the LG-2 but with simpler ladder-bracing under the top instead of the more elaborate X-pattern. The materials and cosmetics are exactly the same, the only way to tell the difference is to peer into the back edge of the soundhole! The sound is brighter and less sophisticated, something like a mix of Gibson and Stella characteristics. This is a well-preserved and nicely original 1951 guitar, showing some light wear and very minor repair.
The dark sunburst top and natural body finish are still relatively shiny with light checking and a number of small dings, dents and scrapes. There is a spot on the lower edge of the top is worn away somewhat and places on the lower sides where the case hinges wore through the finish. One grain crack to the back along and just off the center seam has been cleanly repaired with no touch up. The tuners are correct Kluson-style modern repros, the saddle is a new bone piece and the bridge has been lowered slightly and oversprayed.
This early 1950's guitar is an excellent player, generally superior to examples from later in the decade with a powerful, bright but never shrill tone. It makes an excellent fingerstyle blues guitar and would amplify well for stage use in a variety of styles. What the LG-1's ladder braced top loses in sweetness it makes up for in snap! This one is ready to gig with a nice low action and includes a decent modern HSC. Overall Excellent - Condition.
