C. F. Martin 000-42 Custom Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (2015), made in Nazareth, PA, natural finish, Guatemalan rosewood back and sides, Adirondack spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

This instrument is a Custom-ordered Martin 000-42, a beautiful guitar that does not appear to have been played much since new. It was a 2015 special order through Ithaca Guitar Works, with factory specs that make for an interesting and slightly unusual combination. The top is Adirondack spruce, braced in the 5/16" golden era pattern. Top trim is flamed Koa outer binding (an unusual but attractive choice!) bordering 064" select abalone in the style 42 pattern. The soundhole ring is in the Style 45 pattern, while the tortoise pattern pickguard is the small OM style. The bridge is a black ebony 1930-style with abalone snowflake inlay in the wings and 2 3/16" string spacing.

The back and sides are Guatemalan rosewood, a closer choice to the now-unobtainable Brazilian variety than most other options. The back is also bound with a flamed koa outer layer. The top braces are Adirondack spruce, while the back braces are Sitka. The finish is Martin's "Non-Catalyzed Gloss" with no stain but ageing toner on the top. The mahogany neck is shaped to the profile Martin terms the "Performing Artist"; this is a fairly shallow round-backed "C". The ebony fingerboard is bound in flamed koa, with abalone inlay in the pattern Martin calls "Alternate Torch inspired". The headstock is also faced in Guatemalan rosewood, bound in koa with an abalone torch inlay. The tuners are modern gold Grover openback single machines with hex bushings and "butterbean" buttons.

The nut is the early '30's style 1 3/4" width. This is combined with a 16" fingerboard radius and the standard 000 24.9" scale length, much like a mid-'30's 000. The frets are Martin's G-300 wire, which imparts a vintage feel with just a bit more crown height than was standard in the 1930's. This is a lovely guitar that has a unique look, mostly imparted by the dark flamed koa binding which offsets the glittering pearl differently than the standard white celluloid. It has a nice warm sound that is just starting to develop; years of play on this guitar would make it something quite special.

Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 15 3/16 in. (38.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/16 in. (10.3 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 7/8 in. (632 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).

This guitar shows only the lightest signs of use, with some very small handling marks and the some minimal fretwear in the lower positions. It is truly beautiful modern Martin with unique features and plays and sounds exactly as intended, accompanied by the original black Tolex HSC with the original owner's card, unopened "Care and Feeding" booklet and string card. We have digital copies of the full spec sheets from Martin on file, if more specific info is needed. Near Mint Condition.
