C. F. Martin Style 0 Model Soprano Ukulele, c. 1960, made in Nazareth, PA, natural mahogany finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.
This is a nice example of a late 1950's- 1960s Martin Style 0 ukulele, the company's most basic model. Typical distinguishing features of this era are the longer headstock with a small Martin decal and tuners with rounded plastic buttons an a short shaft. Although these little ukes were Martin's least expensive instrument, they are always built to the company's usual standard and are still considered among the best-sounding ukuleles ever manufactured. This one is an excellent player and has a nicely rounded tone sweeter than some from this decade.
Overall length is 21 in. (53.3 cm.), 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 13 5/8 in. (346 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/16 in. (36 mm.).
This uke is quite clean overall, with just some finish spots but hardly any play wear. There is some checking and small dings and dents is a small chip off the back of the headstock on the rear treble edge, and some wear to the opposite peak. The lacquer has some spotting on the face and a few small raised "dimples" that are hard to explain; they actually look like errant tiny droplets of lacquer on top of the finish but it's hard to say for sure. In any event this is a fairly inconspicuous flaw. There are a few other small dings overall but no cracks or repairs anywhere on the instrument. This is a lovely example of Martin craftsmanship and a great-playing and sounding uke, nicely mellowed in with 50-60 years of mellowing already! Excellent - Condition.
