C. F. Martin D-12-20 Model 12 String Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1967), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 223475, natural lacquer finish, mahogany back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 5/8 in. (39.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 15/16 in. (12.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/8 in. (48 mm.).

This is a relatively clean, original, and fairly early example of Martin's first production 12-string, the D-12-20. This model was launched in 1964 and is basically a 12-fret D-18S with 12 strings, braced rather more heavily for the extra tension as would be expected. This mid-1967 example has some wear overall but does not show a tremendous amount of play time for its 50+ years on the planet.

The finish overall shows small dings, dents, and scrapes, but the only large area of wear is a belt buckle spot on the back. The top has some shallow pick marks over the sound hole and random dings. There is a very small impact mark on the upper side just at the bend over the heel. This is solidly sealed up but not finished over; apart from this, the guitar is crack free. There are a couple of minor dent marks on the upper side of the neck in the 8th fret area. The pickguard is a correct-style later replacement; many of the black acetate originals have curled up like a potato chip by now!

The bridge was reglued at some point; this is particularly common on this 12-string model. The guitar has had a clean neck reset and fret work and the fingerboard has some light divoting, but the guitar plays well. This is a much nicer and more responsive guitar than the typical 1970s examples, fitted with the openback Waverly tuners typical of the 1960s instead of the very heavy "box" Grover pegs Martin used on later 12-strings, with better handling as a result. This is a nice older Martin 12-string with a big ringing sound, still housed in the original green plush-lined HSC. There is a passive under-saddle pickup mounted connected to an endpin jack; this is quite functional if not state of the art today. Excellent - Condition.
