C. F. Martin Style 0 Model Soprano Ukulele, c. 1925, made in Nazareth, PA, natural varnish finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, black gig bag case.

This is a nice-playing if somewhat worn-in early Martin Style 0 ukulele, with the varnish finish and wooden violin-style pegs used into the mid-'20s. Although these were C. F. Martin's least expensive instrument ever (originally retailing in the $10-12.00 range), they are built to the high standards of all the company's instruments.

Martin ukuleles, especially the early models, are still considered among the best-sounding and playing ukuleles ever manufactured. The all-mahogany Style 0 is the simplest design, and while almost completely devoid of ornament still has as beautiful a tone as most any Martin uke. The 1920's models were built somewhat lighter than in subsequent decades, and tend to be the best sounding of all; this one certainly bears this out!

Overall length is 20 3/4 in. (52.7 cm.), 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 13 5/8 in. (346 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/8 in. (35 mm.).
This uke is in very good playing condition, it has seen some use over the last 9 (!) decades and shows some typical wear with one old repair. There is a decent-sized impact crack to the upper side waist area, well sealed with very light polishing out and touch-up but still plainly visible. Other than this, the uke remains original with no other repairs or alterations.

Overall the thin varnish shows dings, scratching and scuffing into but mostly not through the finish. There are no major areas of loss, with less "strumwear" to the top than many. There are some shallow dings and scuffs in the back of the neck from one of those ancient spring capos, but no heavy wear. The uke plays very well with a splendid sweet and well-rounded sound typical of early Martins. Very Good + Condition.
