This is a superbly preserved example of one of our favorite amps -- the early 1960s "Brownface" Fender Princeton. The Tolex-covered amps of this period were Fender's completely re-engineered line for the 1960s, a new standard in power, design, and function. Standing between the earlier rampaging tweed era and the louder and somewhat cleaner blackface amps that followed, the "brown" amps combine some of the tonal characteristics of both. The tremolo is lush and deep, and the sound starts breaking up just at the perfect volume point for small gigs and recording purposes.

The tube chart is stamped with the date code "MC" indicating it was assembled in March 1963. The transformers are coded to the 36th and 37th weeks of 1962. The speaker is a more recent blue-enameled Jensen-style 30-50W Alnico speaker with no brand stamp that sounds great. This amp has had our standard service with a replacement of the fading Electrolytic capacitors and large underslung "can" cap. Most of the original "blue" Astron signal caps are still intact and working well. All sockets, jacks and pots were cleaned and the amp biased to spec. A grounded 3-prong cord was added and the "death" cap removed.

Externally the amp is very clean overall with just some minor scuffing to the Tolex, a few small marks on the faceplate, some small dings to the backplate and a tiny tear near the top of the grillcloth. The somewhat fragile brown knobs are still all intact, as is the original leather handle with some wear on the top.

Fender's "brown" combo amps were not in production for too long and are much rarer than their blackface descendants; they are often considered a connoisseur's choice in a Fender combo. The Princeton's layout is simple and to the point, with two inputs, tone, volume, and trem speed and depth controls. This remains as cool a small amp as was ever made; simple, and to many players in this less-loud age, the perfect combination of tone and portability. Includes a nicely made modern vintage-style cover. Excellent Condition.
