National Dynamic Model Lap Steel Electric Guitar (1954), made in Chicago, two tone lacquer finish, maple body, original brown hard shell case.

This visually string creation is a super stylish lap steel from the very colorful postwar Populuxe era at the Chicago-based Valco company. The National Dynamic is not only striking to look at but great sounding as well, with the much celebrated Valco/Supro pickup sitting mostly hidden under a plastic cover/handrest. The wooden body consists of two side sections with the tone and volume control knobs mounted on black Lucite plates pegged to an elongated centerpiece carrying the pickup and strings. This guitar sports a host of other flashy looking touches including a 2-tone black/white finish, a dramatic colorful geometric pattern fingerboard, tuners covered with oblong "National" stamped plates, an enameled metal shield logo plate and a large metal pickup/bridge assembly. Beyond making a fantastic Deco-styled visual statement, this National Dynamic has a singing sound to match!

Overall length is 32 1/2 in. (82.6 cm.), 6 1/4 in. (15.9 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 22 in. (559 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/8 in. (48 mm.).

This very striking steel remains original with the period addition of an old costume jewelry totem attached to the headstock face giving it some extra personal mojo! It is fairly clean overall with some typical finish checking and areas of chipping here and there which have had small touch-ups. It remains all original except for new buttons on the Kluson tuners, one of the plastic knobs securing the handrest replaced with a metal nut, and the aforementioned applied doodad on the headstock. This is a very cool and great-sounding example of this singular steel guitar, complete with a slightly battered but still functional OHSC. Overall Excellent - Condition.
