Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1966), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 113805, white lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original grey hard shell case.

This is a very attractive white-finish 1965-6 Fender Mustang which remains all original, just showing some general wear. The Mustang was Fender's classiest student guitar, basically the same as the Duo-Sonic II with the addition of the new "Dynamic vibrato" tailpiece and a floating bridge. The two single-coil pickups are controlled by individual switches allowing in and out of phase combination, with a master tone and volume control. This example was assembled just over a year after the model's debut in the second half of 1964, and shows no changes except for pearloid dots on the fingerboard in place of the earlier "clay" versions.

The body sports a white lacquer finish with light yellowing and some typical checking and wear. The pickguard is laminated plastic with a tortoise shell pattern top layer. The neck is stamped NOV65B, the pots coded to the 42nd week of that year. The pickup carries a pencil date of 2-3-66 and the early F-series serial number plate is consistent with assembly early that year.

The Fender Mustang was instantly successful on introduction and by 1966 arguably the most popular electric guitar in the world. Over 16,000 units sold that year alone, far more than any competitive instrument. It has proved a timeless favorite of countless garage bands and even pro players through the 1960s and '70s until today. This is a played-in but nicely unmodified early example. Like its contemporary automotive namesake the early Mustang remains an American classic and still represents a great deal in an original 1960s Fender guitar!

Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
This guitar remains all original, showing some typical finish wear. From the general look of it we assume this guitar spent some time in a damp environment, but nothing excessive. The body has some fairly heavy checking and crazing to the lacquer, with dings and dents in a number of worn-through spots, mostly on the edges. There is some noticeable belt buckle wear to the back. The neck finish is worn down somewhat on the edges, also showing checking and some small dings and dents with a bit of flaking to the headstock edge.

The only alteration on the instrument is one tiny screw hole in the headstock from a second string tree that was added and later removed. The hardware is original and complete including the trem arm, bridge cover and the grey HSC. Some of the chrome has crazed and a small amount flaked off the tailpiece base, and there is corrosion on some hardware notably the bridge saddles. There is some fret and fingerboard wear in the lower positions but the guitar still plays well. Overall not pristine but a nice playing example of this classic over-achieving little Fender, a super friendly guitar with just enough wear to achieve "genuine relic" status. Overall Excellent - Condition.
