Sonata Professional Model Arch Top Acoustic Guitar, made by Harmony, c. 1940, made in Chicago, sunburst lacquer with stenciling finish, maple back and sides, spruce top; maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, black gig bag case.

This is a very good-playing and sounding pre-war "Store Brand" archtop, almost certainly made by Harmony. The top is not carved but is a spruce sheet pressed into shape over the bracing, and the guitar actually has quite a lively sound. The finish work is very nice, including some typical faux "tiger maple" grain on the back, sides, and neck. The top is bordered with some lovely old fashioned herringbone wood marquetry (shades of Martin!), so if you own this guitar you can truthfully brag of playing a "Pre-War 'Bone!". The neck has a big and chunky "V" profile that slims quite a bit more comfortably down by the nut. While unlikely to replace anyone's D'Angelico, this is a very good quality "knock-around" pre-WWII archtop guitar with a cool vibe.

Overall length is 40 1/2 in. (102.9 cm.), 15 9/16 in. (39.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/8 in. (8.6 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This guitar has been fairly well-played over the years and shows dings, dents, and some finish rubbed off the back of the neck. It has had a refret and neck reset and probably plays better now than it did before Pearl Harbor. It retains the original tailpiece (which is a cool piece in itself), but the pickguard is a repro and the bridge is a well-fit recent adjustable rosewood unit. It looks to have had several sets of tuners over the years; it is currently fitted with Grover Sta-Tites from the early '70s. a lively sounding guitar with plenty of volume but retaining a sweeter tone than many inexpensive archtops. Very Good + Condition.
