Fender Tremolux Model 5E9 Model Tube Amplifier (1957), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 01054, tweed fabric covering finish.

Height is 20 in. (50.8 cm.), 22 in. (55.9 cm.) width, and 10 in. (25.4 cm.) deep.

This is a stunningly clean early 1957 example of the narrow-panel tweed Tremolux, one of Fender's enduring classic period amps. The 5E9 Tremolux is one of rarest and now most sought-after bigger-box Tweeds. It was introduced in 1955 alongside its smaller cousin the Vibrolux, these two amps pioneering the company's first built-in tremolo effect. This initial 5E9 circuit is essentially a 5E3 Deluxe with the on-board effect added and a taller cabinet, rated at around 14-15 juicy watts.

Just a bit louder and bigger sounding than the standard Deluxe, the late '50s Tremolux is the perfect amp for those situations when the smaller tweeds just don't quite have the power to cut it. The larger box also gives a bit more breadth, letting the bass-response develop more, avoiding the boomy flub sometimes associated with the smaller Deluxe cabinets. The tremolo is lush and deep and has an impressively wide range due to the trem circuit modulating the phase inverter bias, effectively making the effect consistent regardless of the volume setting.

This amp is a simply wonderful example. The tweed cabinet is in impeccable condition with only very minor wear to the outer edges of the corners, and the grille cloth is original and in fantastic shape as well. The faceplate is mirror clean with virtually no scratches or corrosion and all the lettering is intact. The handle looks like a high quality replacement, and shows minimal signs of use. The amp also comes with its original tremolo footswitch, a rarity in itself, in great condition.

This example has a tube chart code GA, dating the amp to January 1957. The original Jensen P12Q speaker is coded to the 3rd week of 1956 (220-603). It has been professionally reconed and is ready for many more years of use. The power transformer is the original Triad 8160 and the output transformer is the original Triad 1839/Schumacher 50246, also used in the 5F10 Harvards and the 5E3 Deluxes. Most of the pots date to the 46th week of 1956 and one to the 45th week of 1955. The chassis tape marking indicates this one was wired up by none other than Lily, whose work we greatly admire as she was also the queen of the Harvards!

The amp sports a great set of tubes, including a pair of NOS Russian 6V6 power tubes and an RCA 5Y3 rectifier tube. It has been given our typical servicing, which includes replacement of all electrolytic caps (neatly housed in the paper covers of the original caps in order to preserve the appearance), cleaning of all sockets, pots and jacks and biasing to spec, a grounded three-prong power cord, removal of line-to-ground capacitor (aka. The death cap) as well as thorough testing. The coupling caps have been replaced with high quality Jupiter paper-in-oil caps. The circuit is original and no alterations have been made other than standard maintenance to ensure reliable operation for many years to come.

This amp is incredibly well-preserved for its age and sounds truly phenomenal. It is currently one of our favorite tweeds in the shop and one of the cleanest of this model we've ever seen. It will surely be an outstanding musical companion for another few decades, at least! Overall Excellent + Condition.
