Northfield NFA-V3 Artist Series Carved Top Mandolin (2021)
Northfield NFA-V3 Artist Series Model Carved Top Mandolin (2021), made in Marshall, Michigan, serial # 24, shaded sunburst finish, flame maple back and sides, spruce top; laminated flame maple neck with ebony fingerboard, tweed hard shell case.
The Northfield Artist Series mandolins were designed with the help of famed mandolinist and multi-instrumentalist, Mike Marshall and bear his signature on the label. These modern F-5 descendants are available in two different bracing patterns, the Adirondack Red Spruce top on this example is built with the two-bar variation. The instrument is built with curly maple and spruce from North America and Europe, seasoned and matched in Northfield's Marshall, MI shop. The instrument is assembled and varnished in their Qingdao shop with set up and final inspection back in Michigan. The mandolin is finished overall in a subtly shaded hybrid varnish "Icelandic Brown" sunburst.
The NFA-V3 has a fast, modern feeling neck with a soft "V" profile and a 1 1/8" nut width. Hardware includes the Gilchrist style Northfield branded hinged-cover tailpiece and Gotoh Deluxe tuners. This mandolin has strong sound with a more powerful low end than many modern F-5's offering excellent balance across its entire range with projection and volume to spare. This higher grade Northfield is a professional quality bluegrass machine that compares favorably with instruments costing much more.
Overall length is 27 1/2 in. (69.8 cm.), 10 in. (25.4 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/16 in. (3 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/8 in. (29 mm.).
This mandolin shows signs of light use, including some minor dings, pick scratches and scuffs mostly to the top. The frets have some very light wear but nothing that impedes playability. This is already a superb sounding instrument, a very fine playing vintage-style modern F-5 style instrument just beginning to be seasoned in. Overall Excellent Condition.
