Hermann Hauser 7 Course Renaissance Lute (1918), made in Munich, Germany, natural varnish finish, flame maple bowl and neck, spruce top, ebony fingerboard, trunk case.
 
Overall length is 31 1/4 in. (79.4 cm.), 13 5/8 in. (34.6 cm.) width, and 9 1/8 in. (23.2 cm.) in depth at deepest point. Scale length is 25 in. (635 mm.). Width of nut is 2 1/2 in. (64 mm.). This over 100 year old Hermann Hauser I lute is in playable but unrestored condition. It is typical of the early lute revival period, fitted with metal frets instead of the authentic gut but otherwise relatively historically accurate. Overall the instrument is generally well preserved but has several old top cracks behind the bridge that would likely need to be spliced. There is only minor wear to the instrument otherwise; it is sold in as-is condition but could be made playable if desired. There are holes for strap buttons at either end that are not fitted. The original dated Hauser label is clearly visible through the soundhole. This is an interesting example of this most revered master's early work and a lovely historical piece. Original Artifact.
