C. F. Martin HD-28 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1986), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 466480, natural finish, Rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.

This 1986 Martin HD-28 is not a specific year re-issue model but a standard production Dreadnought, though it reintroduced some Martin features that were not otherwise seen in production guitars since the 1940's. This includes herringbone trim around the top and scalloped bracing, both much-requested by players in the 1970s. It maintains the other traditional features of this model including Indian Rosewood back and sides, a Sitka spruce top with white edge binding outside the Herringbone, a black and white bound soundhole rosette, triple ply binding on the back and a zipper center stripe on the back. The guitar is scalloped X-braced with a maple bridge plate, the pickguard retained the black plastic look used since 1966.

The headstock features Indian Rosewood veneer and Martin branded chrome plated enclosed tuners. The mahogany neck has an ebony fingerboard with graduated pearl dots and is fitted with an adjustable truss rod, accessible through the soundhole. The neck contour is a wider-feeling "C" profile with the hints of a "V" noticeable in more vintage styled models like the HD-28. The bridge is ebony with a drop-in bone saddle. An after market under-saddle pickup has been added with an endpin jack and volume control mounted under the bass side of the soundhole. This is a great gigging HD-28, an excellent player just worn in enough to take out without anxiety but still a fine playing and sounding stage guitar.

Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 5/8 in. (39.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 15/16 in. (12.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This guitar shows some general wear and tear but no serious abuse. There is light to moderate finish checking throughout, most notably on the top. There is a carefully reglued and cleated grain separation right next to the center seam that was open between the bridge and the tail block. No other cracks are evident. There is an area of finish loss, the result of pickwear on the lower soundhole rim.

There are a couple of pressure marks on the top at the bottom of the lower bout on the treble side. There is buckle wear on the back also at the bottom of the treble side lower bout. The neck has been re-set, and a strap Button installed on the treble side heel. The bridge has been slightly shaved, most noticeably on the treble side, presumably in an effort to lower the action prior to the neck set. This is simply a good gigging or recording '80's HD-28, a friendly player with a nice, smooth sound now over 35 years old and really starting to feel aged in. Overall Excellent - Condition.
