C. F. Martin 0-15 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1949), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 109959, natural mahogany finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.

This is a nicely preserved, great playing and sounding postwar 0-15, the lowest-ranked guitar model in Martin's 1940s line. The 0-15 is a study in careful economy; the finish was less polished out than the otherwise identical 0-17, but structurally the guitars were the same. To achieve the lowest possible price the standard Martin appointments were reduced to the minimum. There is no ornament besides a W/B/W sound hole ring, tortoise celluloid pickguard, and gold Martin logo decal. The tuners are large-plate openback plastic-button Klusons typical of the late '40s.

This small-bodied all-mahogany guitar has a surprisingly loud and rich voice, and sounds great finger or flat-picked. While this was the least expensive guitar Martin offered, listing for $50.00 in early 1950, it is still built to the expected Martin standard of quality and is an extremely fine instrument. A total of exactly 750 of these little mahogany marvels were shipped from Nazareth in 1949, and this has to be one of the nicer surviving examples.

Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.), 13 1/2 in. (34.3 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/4 in. (10.8 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

Overall, this 0-15 remains quite well preserved for 72 years on Earth, with some typical maintenance and minor repair over the years. The original lacquer finish has remained untouched, save for some fairly minor nicks and scratches over the body. There are marks from an old impacts on the side a few inches above the endpin. The top has a very tight grain split that extends three inches off of the bridge on the bass side, which has been properly sealed with no added finish. There is a fairly minor crack going against the grain on the side, right above the end block where the impact was made, that has been neatly sealed.

The neck has been neatly reset, and the frets leveled and polished for optimum playability. The original bridge has been replaced with a well done later replica. All of the original bracing and bridgeplate remain in unaltered condition. The open-back Kluson tuners are still fully functional, although the original buttons were replaced some time ago. This fine-playing and sounding mahogany Martin resides in a modern Martin hardshell case, made by TKL. Overall Excellent Condition.
