Weber Tamarack Model Flat Top Mandocello (2011), Logan, Montana, serial # 1106609.

This Weber Tamarack Mandocello is something of a hybrid instrument, using the general design more common with modern 8-string Irish bouzoukis in a lower tuned Mandocello format. It is built on a teardrop shaped flat-topped body with the neck faired in and a modified oval soundhole. The fairly large body without a guitar-like waist adds increased low-end presence, volume, and warmth compared to most modern arch-top Mandocellos. With its flat X-braced top and flat back, it has a more mellow sound with a less cutting presence than a carved top carved version would be expected to have. It offers lovely sustain and a remarkably open voice, especially attractive for solo or small combo playing.

With a 24.75" scale neck tuned to C in fifths (an octave lower than a Mandola, and a fifth under the Irish bouzouki/octave mandolin) the mandocello can appeal to both guitar or mando-family players looking for new sonic horizons. All Weber Mando-family instruments are currently out of production and were only produced in fairly limited quantities even when offered new. This Tamrack model is one of their more unique playing and sounding creations, and one of the best sounding modern mandocellos we have heard.

Overall length is 39 in. (99.1 cm.), 14 3/4 in. (37.5 cm.) across at the widest point, and 3 in. (7.6 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 9/16 in. (40 mm.).

This 10-year-old Tamrack is in used but excellent playing condition. It and shows some minor playwear to the finish most notably a few pick scratches to the upper edge of the top and one deeper impact mark into the wood just above the fingerboard extension. The set-up is excellent, the instrument plays very easily (especially for a mandocello!) and sings with a powerful and warm but well-focused sound. It includes the original case and some Weber paperwork. Overall Excellent Condition.
