Fender Telecaster Thinline Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1974), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 656867, natural polyester finish, ash body, maple neck, molded plastic hard shell case.

This Fender Telecaster Thinline dates to 1974, a couple of years after the model was revamped from its original 1968 design. The Thinline differs from the original Telecaster in having its solid body routed out substantially, creating a semi-hollow instrument with a single f-hole in the top. The earliest versions were fitted with standard Telecaster single-coil pickups and wiring, but beginning in late 1971 the Thinline was altered to carry two of the new Seth Lover-designed Fender humbucking pickups.

Unlike some other revamped Teles, it retained the original Telecaster-style wiring with a single tone and volume control and a 3-way switch. These Fender humbucking pickups caused little excitement when new but have since developed something of a cult-like following...they do have a unique sound!

The bridge on this Thinline is a Stratocaster 6-saddle non-tremolo style in place of the traditional stamped metal 3-saddle Telecaster bridge. The neck is fitted with the then-new 3-bolt tilt attachment system and "bullet" truss rod, which adjusts from the headstock end. The body and neck have a fairly heavy natural Polyester finish typical of the period.

Internally this guitar has pot codes of 7340 and 7409, with pickups also date stamped to 1974. The neck has no discernable date stamp, it has faded beyond visibility. At 7.75 Lbs. this particular guitar is no lightweight but not overly heavy, unlike some '70s ash-bodied Fenders! This is a nice-playing example of what has become one of Fender's best regarded '70s creations, ignored at the time but now something of a rediscovered classic.

Overall length is 38 1/2 in. (97.8 cm.), 12 3/8 in. (31.4 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.)., 7.75 lbs.

This 55+ year oldTele shows some wear and minor repair but no serious modifications. The fairly heavy original Poly finish on the body has checking with numerous small dings and scrapes but no really heavy wear. Some of the plating is gone from the pickup covers but both pickups sound great. All hardware appears original, inside and out except under the pickguard there is some grounding foil in the cavity, possibly added later. There is a lot of plating wear on the volume knob, not so much on the tone; someone apparantly was adjusting their level a lot!

The clear Poly finish on the neck has some chipping and flaking mostly along the edges, but no heavy wear. The neck has had some maintenance work done. There is a patched piece of maple on the headstock side of the nut, and the nut itself is replaced. The first four frets were also replaced some time ago; the rest appear original. The later fret is close the original Fender frets not quite as neat, but perfectly playable. The guitar plays well and sounds great; it includes a '70-80's molded plastic Fender HSC. Excellent - Condition.
