Fender Mustang Model Solid Body Electric Guitar (1967), made in Fullerton, California, serial # 217611, Daphne Blue lacquer finish, alder body, maple neck with rosewood fingerboard, original grey hard shell case.

This is a very attractive and extremely well-preserved Fender Mustang, made in late 1967. So many mustangs were made in 1966 that '67's are actually comparatively rare. The neck is dated November 1967, the pots coded to the 31st week of 1966. Everything is identical to its 1966 siblings, the experiments with heavier finishes were just beginning at Fender when it was made and had effected this model yet.

The Mustang was Fender's classiest student guitar, basically a Duo-Sonic with the new "Dynamic vibrato" tailpiece and solid-saddle floating bridge. The body on this example sports a lovely blue lacquer finish with hardly any yellowing or fade that was one of three standard finishes offered. The pickguard is laminated plastic with a flashy white pearloid top layer. The switches mounted above the two pickups offer interesting in/out of phase sonic options, something Leo was interested in by the mid-60s. This electronic layout was shared only with the Duo-Sonic, as was the 24" scale neck.

Like its automotive namesake the Mustang was instantly successful upon its introduction in 1964 and has proved a timeless favorite of countless garage bands from the 1960s and '70s until today. This was the most popular electric guitar in the world in 1966, shipping in far higher numbers than any competitive instrument. Many of these were likely still in stock at dealers when this one was made the next year but obviously demand for this best-of-all student models remained strong in later 1967 and orders were still coming in to Fender Sales. The 1960s Mustang remains an American classic, still a great find in an original 1960s Fender guitar.

Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 12 1/4 in. (31.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 1/2 in. (3.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 in. (610 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).
For the most part this is a very clean and original guitar, showing only some light wear. For some reason lost to history there is heavy finish checking on the headstock, with some flaking to the Fender decal. Apart from this the finish shows only smaller dents and chips; overall the lovely blue body finish has a great look with just some minor fade.

All hardware is original and correct except the almost always missing snap-on bridge cover is indeed missing. The plating is still shiny with only light wear. The frets and fingerboard show light wear in the lower positions but the guitar remains an excellent player, complete with the oft-lost trem arm and a solid original case with both large end latches working (the small center one is broken). Excellent + Condition.
