C. F. Martin D12-35 Model 12 String Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1969), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 245437, natural lacquer finish, Brazilian rosewood back & sides, Sitka spruce top, ebony bridge & fingerboard, period black hard shell case.

The Martin D-35-12 was the company's higher end models in the 1960's, a very deluxe rosewood-bodied 12-string. This one squeaked in under the wire to use all Brazilian rosewood for the back and sides; Martin began substituting Indian not long after it was made. There is even some colorful figure to the rosewood in spots. It also retains the older style openback Waverly tuners, making the headstock less weighty than some! The typical Martin 1960s 12-string layout is maintained with a 12-fret body, wide neck and slotted headstock. The body is multi-bound, the fingerboard single bound with a multi-ply soundhole ring and the typical period black pickguard.

The D-35 was introduced in 1965, designed with a 3-piece back specifically to use Martin's stock of smaller rosewood panels. Both 6 and 12-srting versions were offered, with a 12-fret body stock on the latter. Just over 800 of these fancy rosewood 12's were made in 1968, a pretty successful model considering its list price, a whopping $485 without the case. At the time it was Martin's top-line 12-string, although soon supplanted by a pearl trimmed D12-45. This is a big, smooth sounding guitar with the deeper ring typical of Brazilian 12-strings, a classy instrument in every way.

Overall length is 40 3/4 in. (103.5 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 7/8 in. (12.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.).

This is a generally quite clean and original guitar showing some wear (mostly to the top) with an added Fishman Acoustic Matrix pickup and endpin jack for performance situations. There is some pickwear to the top into and partially through the finish in the area under the fingerboard in front of the pickguard. The rest of the top is relatively quite clean with a few random marks and one deeper case lid bite just off the back edge. The remainder of the instrument is quite clean showing only very light wear.

There are no cracks or other repairs visible, even the bridge does not appear to have ever lifted (quite a bonus on a 12-string!). There is some minor fretwear in the lower positions and the nut appears to have been reseated, but no other alterations besides the added pickup and jack. This is a comfortable player with a good action and robust sound. It is housed in a well-fitted HSC that appears somewhat older than the guitar, with a "C F Martin" gold stencil on the lid. Overall Excellent Condition.
