Kimble Style A Model Carved Top Mandolin (2016), made in Cincinnati, Ohio, serial # 237, sunburst varnish finish, flame maple back, sides and neck, spruce top, ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

Will Kimble is one of today's most respected modern mandolin makers, and this A-5 style instrument is a good example of why. Primarily inspired by Loar-era Gibsons, Will Kimble builds only small batches of handmade mandolins each year inspired by his father and mentored by noted luthier Lynn Dudenbostel. Kimble mandolins are designed to offer tonal power, clarity and pure sound reminiscent of the original F-5s of the 1920s in a more modern package.

This F-hole oval bodied instrument has just passed its 9th birthday but feels like it is still waiting to be really played in. It is hand-signed and dated by Kimble on the label with the style and serial number. The cosmetics are Loar-inspired without being a dead copy and the instrument neatly combines vintage aesthetics with modern playability. The round-packed neck is a bit meatier than many modern mandolins, and the fret wire chunkier as well. It is easy to really "dig in" on this mandolin, and the resulting sound is powerful and focused without ever sounding thin. This is one of the nicer modern mandolins we have had recently regardless of origin, price or style; just a lovely player's piece in every way.

Overall length is 27 5/8 in. (70.2 cm.), 10 in. (25.4 cm.) across at the widest point, and 1 7/8 in. (4.8 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 14 in. (356 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/16 in. (27 mm.).

This mandolin shows light signs of wear, but nothing major. There are some small dings and dents and some deeper scuffing marks into the finish on the back but nothing really serious. This is an excellent playing instrument, a cool variation on the classic/modern mandolin paradigm. It is housed in the original case, with a business card from Will Kimble included. Overall Excellent + Condition.
