Gibson Super 400 Crimson Custom Model Arch Top Hollow Body Electric Guitar (2014), made in Nashville, TN, serial # 12064002, natural lacquer finish, flame maple back and sides, spruce top; laminated maple neck with ebony fingerboard, original black tolex hard shell case.

This lovely blonde acoustic/electric archtop is just about 10 years old, a beautiful modern rendering of what would have been a custom order guitar around 1961; a Venetian cutaway Super 400 CES with a single humbucking pickup. It was built in 2014 by the Gibson Crimson Division, which handled all of the top-end archtop builds at the Custom Shop and comes with a special red-booklet format COA. The guitar is signed & Dated May 16, 2014 by James D. Culbertson, Master archtop builder at the time. The "Crimson Custom" was the top line for Gibson and made limited numbers of special high-end carved archtops.

This guitar radiates opulence; the back, neck and sides are made of fantastically grained flame maple, the top of very fine-grained spruce with some lovely cross-grain flame finished in a lightly ambered clear lacquer. The scale length is 25 1/2"; the neck has a fairly deep rounded profile, chunkier than an actual 1960-61 ever was. The carved spruce top is parallel braced. A single gold-plated humbucking pickup is mounted in the neck position, controlled with '50s style amber volume and tone knobs. There is multiple binding everywhere; the ebony fingerboard and headstock overlay have bold Deco-styled split block pearl inlay while the tailpiece is finely engraved. The bridge is a gold Tune-O-Matic on a pearl inlaid ebony base.

If Wes Montgomery had wanted a Super 400, this would have been what Gibson made for him! James Culbertson and the modern Gibson Crimson Custom shop went all out here to create the finest playing and sounding Super 400 that neatly covers the amplified spectrum while retaining considerable acoustic character.

Overall length is 44 1/4 in. (112.4 cm.), 18 in. (45.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 7/16 in. (8.7 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).

As with many modern collector grade archtops this is a VERY clean guitar, appearing little played since new. There is only minimal handling wear overall, most notable on the gold plated bridge and pickup cover. The special "Custom" trussrod cover shows more scuffing and wear than the rest of the guitar; perhaps it was stored in a drawer for a while, but we have now seen two like this! There is no pickguard currently mounted, but a small screw in the top and corresponding hole in the rim indicate one was once in place. The guitar is a fine player with a fine sound both electrically and even not plugged in. It resides in the original white plush-lined black Tolex HSC with the Crimson COA. Excellent + Condition.
