C. F. Martin HD-28 Custom Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1991), made in Nazareth, PA, serial # 509141, natural finish, Brazilian Rosewood back and sides, Sitka spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, original molded black plastic hard shell case.

This is a lovely special D-28 Herringbone made in 1991, stamped "Custom" on the neck block with a special label signed by C.F. Martin IV, bearing the typed-in name "Edward G. Schwerman", the serial number and "19 0f 23". The back and sides are spectacular colorfully grained Brazilian rosewood and the top is very tight grained Sitka spruce. The scalloped bracing is specified as "DOMLE" for D-OM-Limited Edition, another term for then old 1930's style now called "advanced" with the X crossing 1" from the soundhole. The top is trimmed in the traditional herringbone with ivoroid binding, the inlay in the ebony fingerboard is the traditional slotted diamond pattern and the tuners are 1980s styled openback Grovers, the most "vintage" type that could be had before the modern wave of reissue machines. This is a truly superb Herringbone D-28, a delightful instrument in every way and with 30+ years behind it ageing into being a wonderful sounding guitar.

Overall length is 41 in. (104.1 cm.), 15 5/8 in. (39.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 15/16 in. (12.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This guitar shows very little wear for its 30+ years on Earth, with just some very minor scuffing and handling marks. A strap button has been added to the heel and the pickguard has shrunken up slightly along the upper edge, otherwise we would rate this close to near mint. The action is very comfortable and this is a big sounding guitar, naturally seasoned in with a lot of power but adding an unusual clarity for a modern Dreadnought. It lives in the original molded HSC, but no paperwork is included. We do have a digital copy of the factory spec sheet. Excellent + Condition.
