Gibson LG-2 Model Flat Top Acoustic Guitar (1961), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 30988, cherry sunburst top, dark back and sides finish, mahogany body and neck, spruce top, brown tolex hard shell case.

This is a well-loved, nicely played-in but structurally excellent early 1960s example of Gibson's best-known small body flat-top guitar, the LG-2. Since the early 1940s this model had been a stalwart in Gibson's line; In 1962 it would be renamed the B-25 with some minor changes. This LG-2 is from the model's final full year, although accounting for the evolution characteristic of Gibson instruments its successor the B-25 is essentially the same guitar.

This LG has the larger post-1955 larger tortoise pattern celluloid pickguard and a top-belly rosewood bridge with an adjustable ceramic saddle, a recently introduced feature at the time. The triple-bound top has a much lighter cherry sunburst than darker brown '50s examples, a new look for the 1960s. The single-bound back and sides are finished in a medium-dark mahogany shade. The round-backed neck has a slim, fairly flat profile typical of the early '60s; it is comfortable and plays extremely well. The headstock has a block script Gibson logo and Kluson Deluxe strip tuners.

In 1961 just over 750 LG-2s were shipped, so it is not a particularly rare guitar but also one not often as well cared for as the higher-end models. This 60+ year-old Gibson shows general wear overall but remains a very comfortable player in ready-to-gig condition. It looks a bit battered but unbowed six decades on, a genuine classic and fine choice for pickers who love the Gibson sound and prefer a smaller-bodied guitar.

Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 14 3/8 in. (36.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/2 in. (11.4 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).

This 60+ year old Gibson has a decent amount of wear overall but feels well-loved; it sounds and plays great with a super friendly feel. The all-original finish has numerous dings, dents and scrapes but no major areas of loss to the wood except some pick wear to the lower soundhole rim. The headstock shows numerous dinks along the edges but the back of the neck is relatively clean with some small dings and one deeper scrape behind the nut.

There are a couple of deep scratches to the upper top that look like cracks but are not; there is one small old repaired grain split off the treble side of the fingerboard running to the soundhole. The back has one rather random sealed split above the center seam that looks impact related. There is also a deep impact dent on the side at the turn of the lower bass bout. Other then these the guitar is solid and crack-free.

The neck angle is good and has never been reset; the original ceramic-saddle adjustable bridge is intact and works as intended. Internally the bracing and bridgeplate remain original and unaltered. The original Kluson strip tuners are heavily corroded on the exterior but still work fine. The original larger frets have been polished out and play well; there is minor wear to the fingerboard in the lower positions. This lightly-reliced guitar sings with a warm sweet sound, a cheerful survivor of the folk era housed in a fine modern Gibson HSC. Overall Very Good + Condition.
