Roland Space Echo RE-201 Model Echo Effect, c. 1970s, made in Japan, serial # 610208, Black Tolex finish.

This is a generally clean all-original example of this much sought after tape unit, second only to the original Echoplex as the most celebrated of its type. Widely praised for its warm sound and reliability, the Roland RE-201 Space Echo was both a tape echo and reverb in one unit, featuring three inputs, two mic and one instrument, each with their independent input gain control. The mode selection control allows for reverb only, four echo settings and seven settings of delay and reverb combined. Additional controls include bass and treble controls, reverb and echo volume and intensity and repeat rate controls.

Roland serial numbering from this era can be tricky to pinpoint This one indicates construction either in August, 1977 or December, 1985. In either case this unit was the absolute industry standard for analog tape delay in the '70s and '80s, before digital effects took over. Many feel it has never been bettered for the palette of sounds available, and it remains widely used by those for whom only a genuine tape echo will do!

Height is 7 in. (17.8 cm.), 15 3/4 in. (40 cm.) width, and 11 1/8 in. (28.3 cm.) deep.

The unit presents as used but never abused. The black Tolex-covered case shows a bit of dirt and a few dings around corners and edges, but is generally in good shape showing only minor external wear overall. The top of the cabinet shows the faint light outline of another box and a couple of guitar picks that likely sat atop of the unit for years! The English-written plastic-coated instruction sheet inside the cover is in fabulous condition and the inside of the case shows hardly any signs of corrosion with all the internal components in good shape. One of the handle mounts appears to have been replaced and the handle itself shows some missing rubber at the mounting end. The faceplate shows some minor dings and scratches but is overall free of any notable dents or corrosion and all the original knobs are present and intact.

Electrically, the unit is nice and original. It has been fully serviced with new tape and is running well, ready to give you the sounds of SP-A-A-ACE, and a wide range of echo effects that have been favorites for several generations now. Very Good + Condition.
