Silvertone Model 1448 Amp-In-Case Set Model Semi-Hollow Electric Guitar, made by Danelectro (1963), made in Neptune, NJ, serial # 2063, black lacquer with sparkles finish, masonite and pine body, poplar neck with rosewood fingerboard, black amp case case.
The sort-of iconic Model 1448 was the less expensive of two models of this classic Danelectro-made Silvertone 1960s guitar, sold through Sears and original equipment for thousands of budding players and teen combos in the 1960s. This fairly early example dates to 1963, before the Beatle-inspired electric guitar boom really kicked into the stratosphere.
The guitar is built on a semi-hollow, black sparkle-finished, double cutaway, asymmetrical body with sharp curling "horns," vinyl edge trim, and a white Masonite pickguard. Someone at Sears must have thought "kids like sparkles", as it's a recurring finish motif on Silvertone instruments. Fittings include one great-sounding Dan-O lipstick pickup with tone/volume controls and the traditional Dan-O chrome plate bridge with rosewood saddle. The short-scale neck ends in a Silvertone logo "paddle" headstock with Waverly strip tuners, later examples from 1964 and on substitute Danelectro's in-house skate key-style machines.
The amp-case is very basic but surprisingly functional, making up in snarl what it lacks in volume. This is a decently preserved very playable example of this great-sounding little classic, one of the few remaining bargains in an actual American-made vintage guitar going.
Overall length is 35 in. (88.9 cm.), 13 in. (33 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 5/8 in. (4.1 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 23 1/2 in. (597 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/4 in. (44 mm.).
This is a fairly clean and early example of this classic set, showing some wear but generally well preserved for 60+ years on. There are some minor dings, scratches and worn spots, with a few edge rubs on the guitar where the textured vinyl siding has picked up dirt from contact with the fabric inside the amp/case. There is a feelable dink to the back of the neck on the bass side by the 3re fret. The case unit is fairly clean as well, with some wear mostly to the outside of the fairly flimsy covering. There is a small crack to the Masonite faceplate of the amp just by the SEARS logo.
The amp works as well as ever with the original Silvertone-branded power tubes, and sounds just as expected! The only non-original element in the set are the tone and volume knobs on the guitar; these are chromed plastic Hi-fi style and appear to be off another period guitar, probably Japanese. This is not the cleanest of these sets we have had but really pretty nice overall, and definitely one of the better players. Excellent - Condition.
