C. F. Martin Style 2K Model Soprano Ukulele (1921), made in Nazareth, PA, natural varnish finish, Koa body, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
This is a very fine sounding Martin Style 2K ukulele from the first part of the 1920's, with lovely early-style koa wood on the top and back. This is usually not as dramatically flame grained as the later '20s style koa, but often creates a deeper, mellower tone. This uke is finished in the very thin early '20's varnish and retains the original violin-style wooden friction pegs. Combined with the 10th fret fingerboard dot position and ebony nut and saddle these features date the instrument to 1921 or the early part of 1922.
The Style 2K is a medium-fancy uke introduced in 1919, at the time one model down from the top-line more ornamented Model 3-K. The pearl trimmed 5K was just around the corner at the time, introduced for the Christmas season of 1922. The 2K is a neat and handsome ukulele with a triple celluloid bound top, single bound back and six-ply soundhole ring. Other features include bar frets, a rosewood fingerboard with some dramatic figure and small dot inlay.
The 2K listed around $20.00 in the 1920's which was not cheap for a ukulele; the model sold in much smaller quantities than Martin's less expensive Style 0's and 1's. Only 82 of these shipped out in 1921, with a further 135 in 1922. This one must be one of the nicer survivors, a really fine example complete in the original hardshell case that would have added about $12 to the price!
Overall length is 20 3/4 in. (52.7 cm.), 6 3/8 in. (16.2 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 13 3/4 in. (349 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/16 in. (36 mm.).
This uke remains in lovely condition a century along, remaining all original including oft-lost wooden pegs. It shows light wear to the finish overall, the original thin varnish showing numerous small dings, dents and scuffing but no major wear. There are no cracks to the instrument at all which is kind of amazing for a 100+ year old koa ukulele. This is a great playing, lovely sounding koa uke from Martin's best era, still intact and singing with the original hardshell case also nicely intact. Overall Excellent - Condition.
