Gibson ES-335TD (Modified) Model Semi-Hollow Body Electric Guitar (1967), made in Kalamazoo, Michigan, serial # 098289, sunburst lacquer finish, laminated maple body, mahogany neck with rosewood fingerboard, black hard shell case.

AH, The '70's! This is a well-used veteran example of Gibson's classic ES-335TD made in 1967 but showing a set of typical player modifications from the mid/late 1970s, when men had a LOT of hair and "old" guitars were templates for sonic experiments. A stop tailpiece has been substituted for the original trapeze, as was very common. Both pickups are period DiMarzio Super Distortion/Dual Sound units, wired with a coil split on each and an in/out of phase option in the blended position. These are selected by mini-switches neatly arrayed around the original larger 3-way switch; Whoever installed this did a much cleaner job than many with a logical and practical player-friendly layout.

The headstock has been Groverized and the de-Grovered, showing scars from this while now carrying modern repro Kluson Deluxe tuners with correct double-ring plastic buttons. The instrument's remaining original features are typical for 1966-7, including the less-common-than-cherry dark sunburst finish with chrome-plated hardware on the original Tune-O-Matic bridge. The plastic knobs are later replacements in the 1950s "hatbox' style.

The rosewood fingerboard is bound with pearloid block inlay. The nut width is the very narrow size adopted in late 1965, a hair over 1 1/2" wide. The neck itself is slim in the lower positions getting noticeable chunkier as it approaches the body and feels great. This guitar shows some play time but remains a great-sounding and playing instrument with a much wider sonic range than a stock model. Even considering the alterations this is a gem in the "ragged but right" mold.

Overall length is 41 3/4 in. (106 cm.), 16 in. (40.6 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 24 3/4 in. (629 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/2 in. (38 mm.)., 7.96 lbs.
This is a moderately well-worn guitar, a "Genuine relic" of the '70s in the parlance of today. It was played fairly extensively and appears to have endured some tougher conditions over the years. The finish has a slightly darkened patina and is very heavily checked over the entire guitar, with some fairly scrapes, dings, and chips. Quite a bit of finish is worn off the back of the neck, and there are dings, dents and scrapes from the first fret area up. The headstock is has some chipped up spots as well.

The guitar shows the modifications as noted above; none of the long-ago removed hardware is included. The pickup rings, pickguard and bridge remain original; the upper strap button is original, the lower a replacement. The large frets appear original, crowned down somewhat with some subsequent wear but still quite playable. The guitar has a slightly scruffy feel but everything works as intended, and this is a cool instrument to play with a naturally hot sound (thanks to the "Supa Distawshun" pickups) but the wiring allows a range of interesting sonic options. At the very least it carries a "Super '70s" period vibe. The hardshell case is a recent 1960s style yellow-lined Gibson repro in very nice condition. Overall Very Good + Condition.
