Tycobrahe Octavia Octave Model Fuzz Effect (1975), made in Hermosa Beach, California, serial # 2263, blue enamel finish, aluminum.
The Octavia pedal legend originates in the late 1960s when the very first few Octavia pedals were handbuilt for one Jimi Hendrix by his tech Roger Mayer. The pedal was responsible for some of the most iconic tones produced by one of history's most iconic guitarists; think 'Purple Haze,' think 'Red House.' After Hendrix passed in 1970, Californias's Tycobrahe company began building and selling small quantities of their take on one of Mayer's pedals. Emphasis on *one* of Mayer's pedals; the very small number of Octavias Hendrix used bore differences, and Tycobrahe's circuit was not identical to that of the first Octavia infamously used on 'Purple Haze.' Mysteries aside, Tycobrahe's covetous Octavia is the closest living relative to one of Jimi's favorite pedals and has the sound to back it up.
While the finer print of the history leaves room for debate and imagination (even according to Tychobrahe's own documentation of the Octavia story), the pedal itself is straightforward with just two knobs for volume and boost, beefing up the intensity of the fuzzy octave effect. The input signal is doubled an octave up and distorted; despite a fairly straightforward circuit, the sound is versatile and able to capture a range of tones from blown out psychedlic fuzz to even ring modulation-esque sounds with the boost rolled off.
Height is 5 1/2 in. (14 cm.), 3 1/8 in. (7.9 cm.) width, and 2 3/8 in. (6 cm.) in depth at deepest point.
This particular Octavia is in excellent functional and cosmetic condition, all original electronics (with the exception of what appears to be a replaced battery snap, a common refrain for a pedal of a certain age) and pots dated squarely to 1975. It still resides in its original, somewhat worn wooden box for safekeeping, though the original protective foam inside has seemingly long since crumbled away with age. A very special, and somewhat mystical, treasure for the psychedelically inclined guitarist. Excellent Condition.
