Martin DeWitte Stauffer Style Romantic Guitar (1996)
Martin DeWitte Stauffer Style Model Romantic Guitar (1996), made in Vlissengen, The Netherlands, natural varnish finish, maple back and sides, spruce top, maple neck with ebony fingerboard, original black hard shell case.
Martin de Witte is a self-taught luthier and machinist who has worked for decades in the Netherlands. He specializes in pre-classical period instruments, building primarily lutes and Romantic guitars. This is a lovely Viennese Stauffer pattern guitar; Dewitte actually makes his own Stauffer-style enclosed and engraved tuner sets for these instruments. This particular guitar is a copy of a one built by Nikolaus Georg Ries which in the collection of The Hague Gemeentemuseum. De Witte took complete measurements of the original guitar and replicated it in fine detail including the clock-key adjustable neck joint, which enables quick and easy string height adjustments. This is one of the nicest and most accurate Stauffer replicas we have seen, and a fine instrument not only for period music but pretty much any style of play.
Overall length is 37 1/2 in. (95.2 cm.), 12 3/16 in. (31 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/16 in. (8.1 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 24 1/2 in. (622 mm.). Width of nut is 1 7/8 in. (48 mm.).
This guitar shows light play wear overall; the original finish is very thin and somewhat inconsistent so in some cases wear and finish anomalies blend together. There are some light finger marks to the top and a lot of very fine scratching to the back, with some general marks overall. The metal plate on the back of the headstock has some random marking to the surface from contact with something. The instrument plays and sounds lovely with more volume than one might initially expect from a guitar of this type. It resides in a nicely fitted hard shell case. Overall Excellent Condition.
