Fender Kingman Bass Model Acoustic-Electric Bass Guitar, c. 2010, made in China, serial # CSI10006194, natural finish, laminated sapele body, spruce top; nato neck with rosewood fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.

From the Wilco Loft studio of Chicago's favorite son Jeff Tweedy, here is a modern 4-string experiment that pulls from vintage Fender history. The Kingman bass is made in China, an acoustic bass guitar based loosely on the 1960s Fender Kingman flat top guitar with an additional cutaway. It features a double-bound spruce top in a natural finish, a sapele body, and bound nato wood neck with a rosewood fingerboard.

The neck is a comfortable slim tapered C profile with a 34" scale and 1 1/2" nut, bound with block inlay similar to a later '60s Jazz Bass. The classic Fender bass headstock with 4-in-line Kluson-style bass tuners completes that look. This 2010 model is a first generation "Kingman Bass I" with the full 34" Fender bass scale; later models cut this back to 30" in the interest of balance, but lost some resonance and the fender feel in the process.

While its auditorium-sized acoustic body can project on its own, it is outfitted with a Fishman pickup system for running to an amp, interface, or DI with controls for volume, tone, and an onboard tuner. It is not a traditional instrument that one would find in a 60's or 70's Fender catalogue, but it is a unique way to achieve a bit of that California sunkissed low-end used to best effect by the likes of Mazzy Star or an Unplugged Nirvana.

Overall length is 49 1/2 in. (125.7 cm.), 15 5/8 in. (39.7 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 5 in. (12.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 34 in. (864 mm.). Width of nut is 1 1/2 in. (38 mm.).

This acoustic bass does not appear to have gotten very much use over the years, but there are a small and subtle number of scuffs and scratches here and there from gentle use. The electronics are untampered with and work as intended. The instrument is all original and completely unmodified, and honestly a much more comfortable playing instrument than many acoustic basses we have encountered. It is outfitted with Mr. Tweedy's choice of black nylon flatwound strings and comes in a well-fitting acoustic bass hardshell case (these were not sold with a case) with the typical markings of the Wilco loft along the bottom edge. Inside lives a certificate of authenticity from the Wilco Loft validating the provenance of this piece. Overall Excellent Condition.
