Fender Nocaster Custom Shop Relic by Dennis Galuszka Owned by Jeff Tweedy of Wilco Model Solid Body Electric Guitar, made in Corona, CA, serial # R7254, black lacquer finish, ash body, maple neck, brown tolex hard shell case.

This 2008 Fender Custom Shop "50'S Nocaster Relic" was built by the venerable Dennis Galuzska, one of the Custom Shop's Masterbuilders, not quite 20 years ago. The body is finished in a heartily reliced black-over-blonde lacquer, intended to replicate an original Fender finished over in black long ago. The headstock bears the "Nocaster" Fender decal, a reproduction of the much sought after period through spring and summer 1950, between Gretsch suing Fender for the use of their trademarked "Broadcaster" brand and Fender deciding on the now iconic "Telecaster" moniker. The pre-weathered maple neck has a full depth but not entirely log-like neck like Fender leaned towards on many 2000s Custom '50s style Teles and is very comfortable; the large frets are a more popular modern choice if true to original Nocaster specs.

The original pickups are wound in the fashion of these early 50's Fender Tele circuits with modern reproductions of the 3-way switch and barrel knobs. The wiring circuit is different from the original; Nocasters had a specific early blend variation of the "dark" circuit rather than the familiar neck-both-bridge 3-way switching with a true tone control configuration used since 1967. This was often modified on actual vintage instruments, and modern examples such as this one tend to have this more broadly popular post-1968 configuration. Overall, the guitar appears little used, but what use it saw was with Chicago's pride, Jeff Tweedy of Wilco.

Overall length is 38 3/8 in. (97.5 cm.), 12 5/8 in. (32.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 1 3/4 in. (4.4 cm.) in depth, measured at side of rim. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 1 5/8 in. (41 mm.).

This guitar only appears to be in heavily played condition from the factory relic job, but in reality it's in great shape! The guitar is all original but for the bridge and saddles which have been upgraded to a Mastery system; these drop right in and do not require any additional drilling, and while the original is no longer in the case one could restore it to Fender Custom Shop hardware if desired down the line. This was quite possibly installed by Mastery inventor John "Woody" Woodland, who was Wilco's longtime tech and worked on the originally Jazzmaster-centric concept with (and specifically for) Nels Cline.

The original jumbo frets are tall and in healthy shape, though the creative direction of the Fender custom shop has added a bit of "dirt" embellishment around them on the fingerboard. The electronics are unaltered and full of searing Tele Twang. It resides in its original brown Tolex Fender branded hardshell case with the original certificate of authenticity from the Custom Shop and a Fender polishing cloth; also inside the case is the certificate of authenticity from the Wilco Loft validating the provenance of this piece, also verified by the markings along the base of the case. Overall Excellent - Condition.
