Lyon & Healy Soprano Ukulele, c. 1922, made in Chicago, natural mahogany finish, mahogany body and neck, rosewood fingerboard, original canvas soft shell case.

This plain but lovely little uke is built entirely of mahogany with a Brazilian rosewood fingerboard and carries several distinctive Lyon & Healy features. Although not marked as a "Washburn", it is very similar to the 1922-24 Washburn Model "UG" with similar features including the unbound body, "smile" bridge with curved pointed ends, sharply pointed headstock, and patented short-barreled friction tuners.

The uke also features an extended rosewood fingerboard with four ivoroid position dots and an ebony nut and saddle. Stamped on the back of the headstock is "Lyon & Healy, makers, Chicago USA" and "Pat. Apld. For"; this firm was very fond of stamping names and numbers on their products, so for an L&H instrument this is relatively discreetly marked. This is likely a very early example of this style from the Chicago company. It is a sweet sounding uke built more lightly than many later Lyon & Healy instruments and a delight to play.

Overall length is 21 in. (53.3 cm.), 6 1/2 in. (16.5 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 2 1/4 in. (5.7 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 13 3/4 in. (349 mm.). Width of nut is 1 3/8 in. (35 mm.).

This uke shows some light wear overall but remains in fine playing condition. There are some scuffs and dings but no cracks, and the only alteration is a new ebony nut. A cool old uke from Chicago, very plain but actually better sounding than many fancier Lyon & Healy examples. It includes a cool if not really functional original canvas case with a broken handle. Excellent - Condition.
