Rodrigo Shopis Gypsy Jazz Guitar (2010)
Rodrigo Shopis Gypsy Jazz Guitar (2010), made in New York City, natural finish, rosewood back and sides, spruce top, mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, black tolex hard shell case.
We see a variety of Selmer-inspired guitars these days, but this one by New York-based Rodrigo Shopis is one of the best at capturing the spirit of the originals with that extra inspired touch of the individual builder. Rodrigo is a singular craftsman, known not only for his knowledge of original Selmer Maccaferri guitars but his ability to interpret this tradition in new and exciting ways. He hand builds his guitars not as exact copies of the old Selmer/Maccaferri design, but as individual adaptations of the instrument well suited to modern players.
That said, this instrument IS a close reproduction of the original "Petit Bouche" style Selmer, with a spruce top, Indian rosewood back and sides and a dot-inlaid ebony fingerboard over the mahogany neck. It is completely hand built and finished, with a beautiful patina that looks decades old without any artificial relic-ing added. This guitar delivers a rich, full bodied tone without the sometimes overbearing high-midrange quality of some Gypsy-style guitars, both ancient and modern. We would rate this as one of the nicest modern Maccaferri style guitars we have had, a tribute to Mario's original design and Rodrigo Shopis' personal dedication to keeping the tradition alive.
Overall length is 39 3/4 in. (101 cm.), 16 1/2 in. (41.9 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 4 1/8 in. (10.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 26 1/4 in. (667 mm.). Width of nut is 1 11/16 in. (43 mm.).
This guitar shows signs of some play time with minor dings and scuffs to the lightly done finish, but no major wear. It plays beautifully with a powerful and lively sound, a gypsy Jazz guuitar with some soul built into it! Overall Excellent Condition.
