Kolya Panhuyzen Classical Guitar (1999)
Kolya Panhuyzen Classical Guitar (1999), made in Schwanau, Germany, natural finish, rosewood back and sides, spruce top; mahogany neck with ebony fingerboard, black hard shell case.
This fine concert guitar is the work of Kolya Panhuyzen, who has been building for more than fifty years. Born in Berlin in 1941, as a youngster he often fell asleep to the sound of Tarrega and Sor studies played by his father. In 1967 Panhuyzen built his first guitar in the workshop of his uncle, Edgar Monch, one of the most influential luthiers of his time. Monch's guitars were played by world-renowned artists including John Williams and Julian Bream. When Monch returned to Germany from Canada in 1971, Kolya began working in his workshop. In 1974, Kolya established his own workshop in Germany and in 1992 a second one in Toronto. Over the course of his career, Panhuyzen has built more than 400 guitars, which have been played by internationally acclaimed guitarists including Carlo Domeniconi, Hubert Kappel, Sonja Prunnbauer, Zoran Dukic, Jury Clormann, and Dale Kavanagh.
Building one instrument at a time, Kolya Panhuyzen has developed a strong reputation amongst professional musicians and advanced students. His instruments are known for their sonority, balance and easy playability, and many leading artists have chosen them for concerts and recordings, among them Carlo Domeniconi, Zoran Dukic, Hubert Kappel, Dale Kavanagh, Matt Palmer, Raphaella Smits and Laura Young. He continues to make master-grade instruments in Germany during the winter and in Canada during the summer months.
This guitar was hand built in Panhuyzen's Schwanau workshop in 1999. The rather austere label is hand signed and dated. It features a two-piece even grained spruce top framed by multi-layer wood purfling. The back and sides are made of beautiful dramatically grained rosewood, with a mahogany neck and superb black ebony fingerboard. The expansive sound is typical of Panhuyzen's instruments; powerful and well balanced with a strong deep bass and singing trebles. This is a fine concert-quality instrument from a very esteemed luthier.
Overall length is 39 1/2 in. (100.3 cm.), 14 5/8 in. (37.1 cm.) wide at lower bout, and 3 3/4 in. (9.5 cm.) in depth at side, taken at the end block. Scale length is 25 1/2 in. (648 mm.). Width of nut is 2 in. (51 mm.).
This beautiful handmade guitar has been in the hands of a performing concert player for some years and shows some notable wear from touring use. The top has numerous fingernail marks below the strings between the soundhole and bridge, with scattered scratches, scuffs and dings over the entire instrument. Four circular tap-protector style clear plastic plates have been added to the back. The back of the neck has an area worn through the finish into the wood between the second and ninth frets showing how much this guitar has been played. A tiny sticker of a dog's paw has been added on the side of the fingerboard above the body at the 17th fret.
There are a couple of typical repairs; a repaired grain split runs along the center seam of the top from the bridge to the back edge. This is solidly but quite visibly sealed with no added finish. A small section of the back center seam above the tailblock has also been resealed, much more neatly and is comparatively inconspicuous. This is a well played in instrument, It has had plenty of time to mature and offers very responsive with a powerful sound and excellent projection. It lives in a good touring case, the lid festooned with stickers of characters from the animated TV series "Bobs Burgers". Overall Very Good + Condition.
